Up Close: The Great Frank Gore

Frank Gore is averaging a half yard better than his career average.
Frank Gore is averaging a half-yard better than his career average.

Now that Frank Gore has space to work with, he is dominating between the tackles.

Frank Gore is one of the most amazing athletes to ever put on cleats in the NFL.

We know the story: two torn tendons in college was supposed to have destroyed a promising career in the NFL. Instead, Gore was drafted in the 3rd Round and will go to the Hall of Fame someday

… ohh, and now he’s a Miami Dolphins in his 14 Season and not washed in the least.

Gore was never flashy like Barry Sander or a speedster like Eric Dickerson. He never had the dominant Offensive Line like Emmit Smith either. What Gore had, and still has, is supreme fortitude and will.

This isn’t to say Gore isn’t physically talented.

He has power, burst, small space agility, and a nice little jump cut. Most NFL running backs would kill to have the physical skill set he has at 35. But his iron discipline and toughness, both physically and mentally, is what makes him special.

Against the #1 Rushing defense that gave up only 65 yards per game, Gore put up 15 carries for 101 yards with 6.7 YPC.

Yes, it was hot and 5 Qts had an effect… and the Dolphins O-line took full advantage. But when you study the film, you see that Gore is playing at a very high level and is still exceptional.

The play below is my favorite play by Gore. It didn’t gain much, but it displays perfectly the will and physical power that Gore has. Ted Larsen and Nick O’Leary are beaten early on their blocks. Notice how Gore responds after the impact.

Yes, O’Leary and Larsen help push the pile, but it’s the raw power and determination to not fold on the impact that begins the drive forward. It was Gore who held it down till the cavalry arrived. A 1-yard run turned into a 5 yard gain… thanks to Gore.

In the film below, Gore gets every last inch out of a run.

Now you have to add the production of the O-line into the equation. Last year the Dolphins and the Colts only gave their runners around a half a yard before contact. This year the Dolphins O-line is giving Gore and Drake much more to work with. Notice how time and time again, #83 O’Leary and #66 Swanson crack the defense open. Once open, Gore tears the defense apart.

Gore is a battering ram breaking the will and bodies of the opposition.

Four and five-yard gains aren’t flashy, but over time they will become chunk gains. And remember, Miami is doing this against an elite defensive front that the best pay per head reviews sites like Ace Per Head said would strangle the Dolphins run game. The man plays like a kid with total abandon. You just have to love Gore… if you love football.

A Running Back and the Offensive Line are like a horse and carriage

In the film below, the Offensive Line dominates and Gore gets chunk plays. The power Gore generates at 5’9” is astounding. Linebacker and Defensive Backs are not happy campers when he has a head of steam.

In this clip, the O-line gets Gore 4 yard before contact, but Gore is a great back that can multiply the space given with vision and talent.

Gore is such a versatile player that he gives coaches the ability to scheme up wins for him.

Gore is an excellent pass blocker. The Dolphins first Touchdown to O’Leary owes a big ‘thank you’ to Gore who made the perfect block. If Gore doesn’t use the Cut Technique there’s a big risk the defender gets into the passing lane and changes the trajectory of the pass, disrupts the timing of the play, or gets a deflection.

This Dolphins score was made possible by an excellent block by Gore.

This Dolphins regime has brought in a few ‘old talents’ that have come to South Florida to cash a check and have their careers die… not Frank Gore though. Not in the least.

I expect Gore to reach 1000+ yards this season and come back next year. It might sounds nuts… but I bet it sounds a whole lot less nuts than it did a few months ago. Besides, who in their right mind would ever bet against a man like Frank Gore… not me. Go Phins!!!
