Wake: Great Is As Great Does!

122114_spt_fins_02_1

Cameron Wake suffered a mid-season Achilles injury in 2015, and most Miami Dolphins News fans were thinking this could be the end of Wake’s career in Miami. However, with only 3 and half months removed from suffering his torn Achilles, Wake is already nearly 100% recovered from the injury! Wake may be a 34-year-old athlete, which is like being a grandfather in the NFL, however, he treats his body like a temple and can arguably still put in 2 or 3 more All-Pro type seasons. Great is as great does.

The Miami Dolphins are believers as well and are in talks to extend his contract. This will offer two great things – cap space and assure that Cameron Wake retires a Dolphin. This is no hyperbole when say I was choked up over the thought. I hate to see a good man go down like Wake did last year. I despised even the thought of that being his end as a Dolphin. It was cruel when you think of the contrast of his explosion of production after the hamstring injury to then a blown Achilles – light speed to a dead halt.

The talk is that Miami is looking to extend Wake’s contract for another 2 years, and then give him a bit more of a signing bonus for 2016, but at the same time lowering his current $9.8 million dollar salary cap number for 2016. In addition, they believe that Wake has proved that he has plenty left in the tank. Being able to lock him down for a couple more seasons would allow them to keep Wake and Suh together, giving them both the chance to reach their full potential. Right before Wake suffered his injury, the best pay per head review sites was seeing flashes of the brilliance of having Suh and Wake play together. These two just needed a little time together (and the dumping of Coyle) in order to fully reap the benefit of each other’s immense talent. So it would be worth its weight in gold to have these two signed and playing together for the next 2 to 3 years.

This could only happen if Wake wanted it to happen, and that speaks volumes about his love for Miami. It obvious when you look at him to see the greatness of him by his physique. It’s obvious when you look at his stats to see the greatness of his career. But, at the lowest point of his professional life, when most would have given up or moved on to another franchise, you are seeing the greatness of his heart and will. Cameron Wake was already a Miami great, but with this kind of injury and return, I see shades of Dan Marino’s return. He is entering that final rung of Dolphins all-time elite. But, silly me, I should have known, great is as great does. Go Fins!!!
