There are a lot of familiar faces that have a ton to prove this Sunday in Miami, but there’s one face all eyes should be on Jamil Douglas. The rookie has had the rough task of manning the RG spot. In broad strokes, the RG is usually the nastier and more physical guard, usually with strength in run blocking. Yes, this is a generalization, but it’s fairly general in the NFL for this “type” of a player to man RG.
In comes Douglas, young, college decorated, mid-round pick with sky-high character, agility, and speed, but sorely lacking power. The NFL scouting report had him billed as “left-tackle” only and for all his speed talent he has an equal lack of strength. Other reports had him being very susceptible to power-moves, the Bull Rush and tentative at the point of attack. If you have watched his play closely, then you have witnessed confirmation of this evaluation.
Several factors have weighed negatively on his situation and enhanced his weakness…and made his already Herculean task that much more difficult come Sunday. The lack of Albert has had a domino effect across the line. Having lesser LT forces double teams and TE/ RB help to that position and forces other needy areas to fend for themselves more often…one such needy place is RG. But, the largest factor outside of Jamil’s control is the man to his left: Pouncy. This is not a knock on Pouncy, but he is a near clone of Jamil possessing more agility and speed than raw power. Pouncy works best at the second level and working the angles on a defender. Last season, when he played guard, he suffered similar issues as Jamil, though his injury compounded his failing. The pairing of both of them has left the right side highly susceptible to power players on the defensive line.

Enter Darius, the Kryptonite of Jamil…and Pouncy ta’ boot: tremendous in size, massive in strength with surprising agility for his size. Paired next to Darius is Kyle Williams, a stout, power player who although doesn’t possess near the same talent as Darius is a 4 Time Pro Bowler and quite good in his own right. Last, there is the other Williams – Mario, massive DE with superstar talent. So what does this all mean – are our Fins screwed! In short, no – not necessarily.
Darius will line up on the left side, either head up or in the A or B gap beside Jamil (1 or 3 Technique). He will command a double team of Jamil and Pouncy. Jamil will be the initial block and that is where he must win until the double arrives. Patriots doubled Darius and canceled him for most of last week. Miami must win the double as well…and Jamil is the head of the spear. Darius looked sluggish last week and came off the ball very slow. If he still hasn’t shaken off the rust from his 1 game suspension, this is where Jamil and Pouncy can win big. It sounds obvious that 2 men should beat 1, but it is where this game will lay. The one caveat is if or when Jamil must face Darius on his own…this will take the game of Jamil’s career to win – but sports betting software odds have had stranger things have happened.
Just as the Pats pressed the Bills with points and forced turnovers from Taylor so must Miami. The defense must get turn-overs, but it is the offense that must come through. It will all start with Jamil v.s. Darius and follow up with Pouncy and Jamil v.s. Darius. Without a doubt, it will then fall on the rest of the O-line to fly mostly one-on-one. So when the ball is snapped fight the desire to look at Tanny or the back and keep your eyes locked on the trenches and on initially on Jamil.
This is where victory or defeat will rest. You could also take a glance at Fox v.s. Williams, but that is the subject of another article – GO FINS!!!
