What Happens If Tunsil Gets Hurt?

Laremy Tunsil is expected to be an elite pass blocker

Tunsil appears to be excellent, but who replaces him if he goes down?

We all know that Quarterback is the most important position in football… and the NFL has made sure we know it too with all their rule changes to protect the “faces of the league”.

Since most betting software solutions rank premier pass rushers as the greatest mitigation of a QB–specifically blindside rushers–the most important asset in protecting the NFL’s golden child is the Offensive Tackle.

For the Miami Dolphins, Ryan Tannehill‘s blindside is manned by Laremy Tunsil, who is expected to be an elite pass protector. We have seen flashes of his ability, but it’s still mostly extrapolation until he has a full season under his belt.

For the sake of argument–and brevity, we’ll say that he will be an excellent Tackle, and as long as he’s in, all will be well.

But what happens if he goes down?

The Dolphins decided to part ways with their former Left Tackle Branden Albert, because he was oft-injured, pricey… and they already had his replacement in Tunsil. But what if like last year, the starting Left Tackle goes down, and even worse now that Albert is gone, what if the replacement of the starter goes down too?

Tunsil isn’t an iron man. He missed two games last year with a shoulder injury and just recently missed practice this week with an undisclosed minor issue.

Tunsil is talented no doubt, but he has missed time in college and as a Pro

Sure, Adam Gase has already shown that he has no problem keeping key starters out of practice even for the smallest reasons, which is smart because for the best players health is more important than more practice time. And yeah, Gase said it was nothing serious that kept Tunsil from practicing, but what if he misses even a little time during the season?

Last year we had Tunsil backing up Albert, but this year we currently have Sam Young backing up Tunsil, with Terry Poole and Avery Young in reserve.

Do any of those players make the Miami Dolphins News fans feel comfortable?

Well, to tell you the truth, Young played pretty damn well in his one game as a starter (Week 12 V.S. San Fran)… surprisingly so. I can’t say if he could hold up the spot for extended play, but he is a veteran (29 years old) and a massive man at 6’8” 315lbs.

As far as Poole or Young go, they zero starts in the NFL, and both are small. If either were to start, it would likely end up a disaster. A miracle can happen–I guess…

But, with the season a few months away, Miami may want to grab some insurance and sign another former starting Left Tackle, such as King Dunlap, or Ryan Clady? Do they have the cap room though? And will the right player be available? What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans and pay per head review sites thoughts about the Dolphins contingency plan, or lack thereof, if Tunsil is forced to miss any playing time this season?

Makes me wonder why Bushrod doesn’t get a shot at LG. He always played LT so if he was still on the left side you could kick him out and put someone else at guard. Kind of what they did last year with Albert and Tunsil. Assuming Bushrod is one of our starters

We are thinking like here. Bushrod was terrible at RB but not at PB in 2016. I could see Bushrod at LG, Urbik at RG, Larsen at backup C and LG and Asiata at back up RG. I don’t see Steen making it. I’m watching last year’s games and making a video about Urbik, Bushrod, and Young–sounds like a law firm–and Steen was really terrible after the first few weeks. He will have to make a lot of progression to stick this year… but maybe. I don’t see Bushrod at LT unless it’s bottom of the barrel time or for a few snaps. He is slow and was getting beat like a drum at LT years ago when his play fell off the cliff. Maybe if he gets alot of help and for limited time. But I do like him and Urbik at G… they are massive people and he is a for T so PB is still good in him… especially at G.
