Where’s Tannehill’s Improvement?
Ryan Tannehill is in his fourth season with the team, and over the off-season, he cashed in on a near $100 million dollar contract. Tannehill had his best mini-camp and preseason of his career this year, however, in the first four games of the season, he has looked and played exactly how he played last season. He has not played bad, but he has not played like a top tier Quarterback either.
In four games Tannehill has 1080 yards (7th best in the NFL), 7 touchdowns (tied for 8th best in the NFL), 5 interceptions (tied for 4th worst in the NFL), a QB rating of 77.1 (31st worst in the NFL), and 6.32 yards per attempt. (31st worst in the NFL). The yards and touchdown numbers are very deceiving because the Dolphins have fallen behind in each of their 4 games, and they throw the ball over 60% of the time. The QB rating and yards per attempt explain more of the story, which is that he is not stepping up and taking control of this offense in order to make it more efficient and score more points.
Tannehill is throwing the medium-range passes better, but the long ball is still a throw that is out of reach. There should no longer be an excuse about the level of talent at receiver and tight end because those are the positions that the Dolphins actually have multiple talented playmakers at. Over the years Tannehill has done a good job of spreading the ball around the field, yet for some reason, he is not doing it well this year. Players such as Kenny Stills, Greg Jennings, and DeVante Parker have barely been involved in the offensive attack. Between those three players, they have 19 catches and 1 touchdown. Now compare that to Tannehill’s three favorite targets of Rishard Matthews, Jarvis Landry, and Jordan Cameron who have a total of 57 catches and 3 touchdowns. (all three of those touchdowns belong to Matthews.)

Some of this is definitely on the play calling of Bill Lazor, who has failed to script plays that take advantage of the size and red zone ability of players such as Cameron, Parker, and Jennings. Each of these players was expected to make an impact inside the RedZone, however, between the three of them, they have 0 touchdowns. Lazor and Tannehill must find a way to get these players involved in the scoring. Clearly, Tannehill is more comfortable throwing to Landry and Matthews, two players he has played with before, but this is the NFL, and players are changing teams every year, and the best QB’s can play successfully with whoever is out there catching the ball (cough, cough Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning).
Tannehill also needs to become more of a leader on the field and in the locker room, and at the moment most of the best pay per head reviews would agree he is not doing that. One of the many problems with this team is that there is a lack of leadership on the team. Tannehill is being paid like a franchise QB, but now he needs to start playing and acting like a franchise QB. Don’t get me wrong, Tannehill has not been playing badly, he just has not been playing like a franchise $100 million dollar QB. He has not taken the team on his arm this season and won a game. Landry has done it in the Redskins game, but this is a QB driven league, and we need our QB to win us some football games. Does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans think Tannehill can take the next step in his development and become a winning QB, or is the organization spinning its wheels with a slightly above average QB?

This article from the Palm Beach Post suggests that Tannehill isn’t allowed to audible or he has very limited flexibility to change plays at the line.

I would hope that he would be allowed to change the play depending on what he sees the defense doing. Hopefully Campbell will let Tannehill change up the plays as he sees fit. I mean our season is already going to be an uphill battle so I’d rather let Tannehill sink or swim so we can see how good he is at reading the defense.
It starts with play calling. Sure, we may struggle at guard positions. What is the current guard strength’s, run blocking. We just do not run the ball (74% pass, by far highest in league). I don’t want to hear because we are playing from behind. We are playing from behind because it has been the play calling that has put us in that position. Our defense is put in a tough situation w/being on the field so much, let alone our incompetent “D” coordinator (EX).
Tannehill would greatly benefit from even a threat of a running game. I will be highly disappointing if we don’t try to establish the run and get the balance closer to 55% pass/45% run or vice versa. Play action fakes only work if there is some sort of a running threat. What happened to our read options??? We don’t run that very often or if we do it is w/no success, because there has been no running threat.
Tannehill has to be accountable however. The rest of the season, to me, lies on Tanny’s shoulders. Grant it, if we continue to throw 74% of the time, Tanny will continue to struggle, and it will be tough to get a true evaluation of Tanny. But if this staff right’s the ship schematically, and Tanny continues to struggle, we may be seeing the beginning of the end for Tanny. As it should be!
Time to step up Tanny and be the player/leader that your position requires for success!!!
***5 day till Opening Day II 2015, whoop up on the Titans and let a lot of frustration out***
True 1.5 second leave little chances for success down the field.
So! We want discuss 2015 draft trading the 1st round for more picks and taking that tackle or guard later in the 1st round verses going after a wide receiver that the QB can’t reach!
I believed that the Dolphins dont know who they have? Meaning run the ball teach your team how to double team to make the run plays work. The offensive coordinator has tunnel vision not good. He only see’s passing the ball (That ship has sunk)
I believed that Coach Campbell will address this issue: The Dolphins need to get tough the remainder of the season and run the ### BALL. We cannot stand to see another 1,2,3 (1 minute and 30 second offense and back on the side line. (This equate failure for the entire team) Right now the offense is being over paid (who gets paid million for 12 minutes maybe on the field?????? LESS MAKE IT HAPPEN FINS! WE CAN DO IT.
It is hard for Tannehill to take overa game when he only has one and a half seconds to decide where to throw and half the time he is either running for his life or about to be hit by a 300 pounder
The basic thruth is we cannot win games with the worst offensive line in the NFL
Get new guards and watch the difference
Why does front office continue to ignore the basics of this game
Bad offensive line = less points
Less points = more losses
Make some trades
Trade Wake
Trade Vernon
Trade jennings
But get a damn Guard that can play this game
Give Tannehill a chance – right now how do you expect better performance with the same Guards
We will end up with only 3 wins this season without new guards
Ralph,
I have been screaming for a trade or trades to occur. Need help at OG (both positions). Interestingly, I too brought up Wake’s name along with Jennings. In addition to the coaching changes, a few trades need to happen!
Ok I understand your argument but Tannehill is not the leader and never will be… He is a ok QB that is it. Their is a clause in his contract that gives the team a out of his contract that doesnt hurt the team to much if they keep him thru 2016 season. I think he is gone at the end of next season. Just my thought on this whole mess. Not worth 90 million
This teams offensive line sucks. Tannehill needs a little time to throw the ball. The offensive play calling sucks. Lazor has been a disappointment! He is not using Tannehill’s strengths. I like Dan Campbell. Let’s get back to 500. To winable games!
Two winable games. Darn auto correct!
Lazor has been the most disappointing member of this staff. I hope that the absence of Philbin changes his offensive approach.
