Will Chubb Make a Triumphant Return?

After nearly two seasons sidelined by a devastating knee injury, Miami Dolphins linebacker Bradley Chubb is poised to make a meaningful return in the 2025 NFL season. His comeback has been fueled by resilience and grit—traits he’s had to lean on throughout a career marked by injuries.

Recent images of Chubb show a leaner, more streamlined frame—perhaps the fittest and lightest Dolphins fans have ever seen him. That’s not uncommon after knee surgery, where shedding weight reduces stress on repaired ligaments.

Can Chubb Move the Needle in 2025?

When Chubb was traded to Miami, expectations were sky-high. But that initial excitement cooled quickly. Before his injury on December 31, 2023, in a game against the Baltimore Ravens, Chubb was arguably having the best season of his career. Then came a brutal setback: a torn ACL, meniscus, and patellar tendon in his right knee. The injury required a complex five-hour surgery and a grueling recovery process. It was his third ACL injury—no small hurdle for any athlete.

Despite making progress, Chubb remained on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list throughout the 2024 season. Both he and the Dolphins’ coaching staff made the difficult but wise decision to hold him out longer. And yes, the $10 million injury clause in his contract likely factored into that choice.

A Restructured Deal and a Renewed Opportunity

In March 2025, Chubb and the Dolphins restructured his contract—lowering his base salary while adding performance-based incentives. It was a practical move. With nearly $18 million still owed to Chubb, the team sought to protect its investment. The result was a true compromise: Chubb gets a chance to earn back his money through production, and Miami gains flexibility and upside. A win-win.

Chubb’s Role Is Critical to the Dolphins’ Defensive Aspirations

With the 2025 season looming, you can bet with the best pay per head that Chubb is expected to be a cornerstone of Miami’s defense. His return couldn’t be better timed. Jaelan Phillips is still working his way back from injury, and with rookie Chop Robinson the only healthy impact edge rusher, Chubb’s performance and availability are pivotal. His leadership and experience will be invaluable as the defense looks to find its identity.

But can Chubb be more than just a steadying veteran presence? Can he flash shades of his 2023 dominance?

If so, the Dolphins could field a truly fearsome defensive front. With Chubb, Robinson, Zach Sieler, rookie Kenneth Grant, and a gradually improving Phillips, Miami has the pieces to create havoc in the trenches. And they’ll need to—the outlook in the secondary remains uncertain.

Still, if the defensive line can dominate and the offensive line continues to improve, who knows? Maybe this team can make a real run. It’s the offseason, hope is free, and anything feels possible.
