Miami found a few Free Agent diamonds in the rough this year
The Phins 2019 Season has been as rocky as a 10.0 earthquake, but Miami has stocked up picks and found a few Free Agent gems. Unfortunately, the best of those FA additions are playing on 1-year contracts. While it’s not the end of the world if they don’t resign next season, being as talent starved as the Dolphins are they can’t afford to lose any productive players with nada in return.
Vince Biegel, Evan Boehm, John Jenkins were little more than afterthought signing, but each has contributed strongly at critical needs: pass rush, run defense, and run blocking. Given the influx of rookies expected to be on the roster, resigning these experienced players would bring much needed stability.
Is Biegel a 2nd chance at Rob Ninkovich for the Phins?
Vincent Biegel was traded to the Saints for Kiko Alonso. So far, this has been a winning trade. Alonso has only played in 3 games contributing a total of 11 tackles with a 57.8 PFF Grade. Conversely, Biegel has 8 tackles and 2 sacks, but his pressure generated plenty of pressure on opposing QBs. His 73.8 Overall PFF Grade and 70.6 pass-rush grade shows his play has been much better than his stats might indicate. Beyond this, Biegal has done well at every assignment given to him and is young at only 26 years old. Biegel has a Rob Ninkovich vibe to him. Maybe this time Miami can make good on this type of player?
Many were shocked that Vincent Taylor was released before the season started… Phinsnews among them. John Jenkins replaced him on the interior line. Few PPH bookie software bet Jenkins would end up the Phins best Defensive Tackle much less one of the best in the NFL. But that is exactly what has happened… so far.
Jenkins fits this scheme perfectly and is playing at a very high level with an elite PFF Grade of 86.8. What is even more surprising his the pressure he is putting on quarterbacks. Jenkins is ranked as the 8th best DT by PFF and his pass-rush grade of 86.6 is 5th best in all the NFL. No PFF isn’t an end all be all, but his tape looks darn good as a second proof.
On a negative note, Jenkins turns 31 years old next year and is only playing 75% of the snaps that Miami’s other Defensive Tackles are.
Power running has found a spark behind Boehm at center
Evan Boehm came in a trade with the Colts for a swap of a 6th Round Pick for a 7th Round Pick. So far, Boehm has been gaining traction week after week.
Miami has struggled to find a power running game since the career of Jake Grove ended because the center position has been filled with ‘small guys’ who couldn’t move mammoth interior linemen. Boehm is a monster himself at 6’3” 321. Miami’s best runs last week on a tough Bills defense came inside and Boehm was key on many of them.
Even though Phinsnews saw him as the key to the running game back in September, we aren’t as sold out on him being the long term answer… unless he proves himself this week. This week will be a big litmus test for Boehm. If he succeeds and moves the big Steeler interior, look out!
Boehm isn’t good on pull blocks or at the 2nd level because he is so big, this could restrict his ceiling. But, he is young at 26 and so far hasn’t been a liability in pass-blocking.
2 out of 3 ain’t bad?
None of these players will command a huge contract in the 2020 Free Agency and it was this staff that helped them shine, so I expect them to be inclined to return. I can see Biegel and Boehm returning and Jenkins, due to his age, not being in the Phins interest. Whatever happens, these three players were excellent finds and are a positive, even though small, for long, dark season. Go Phins!!!
