Who will take Delmas’ place?

Last off-season Hickey and the Dolphins signed Louis Delmas to a one year “show me what you can do” deal, and if it was not for his late-season ACL injury in week 14.

Most of the pay per head reviews would have wagered that the Phins would have resigned him. He played very well last season and was a perfect compliment to Reshad Jones at the back end of the defense, however even if the Dolphins were to re-sign Delmas, he would not even be healthy to start the season, so Miami is most likely going to be searching for a replacement starting safety.

One potential option is to go after the Miami native free agent Antrel Rolle from the New York Giants. Even though he is probably past his prime entering his 11^th season, he still has been a very productive player. Last season he had 87 tackles, 3 interceptions, 1 forced fumble, and 9 passes defended. His style of play is similar to Delmas, so the Dolphins could arguably just plug Rolle in for Delmas and not miss a beat. Some of the best sportsbooks would even say that Rolle is a better overall player than Delmas.

The Dolphins were interested in signing Rolle in 2010 when he hit free agency, but the Giants were willing to pay more money, so Rolle went to New York. However now 5 years later even though Rolle has still been one of the more productive safeties in the league, he will not command a huge contract. The Dolphins may also be considered a front runner for his services since he grew up in Miami and even played college ball for the Hurricanes, and many insiders believe that he would prefer to finish out his career closer to home.

If the Dolphins can get Rolle at a reasonable price, then this would be a great signing, considering he fills a need and is still a productive player. This would also allow Miami to not have to use a high draft pick on a safety, and they would be able to use their higher round picks on other areas of need. The best move would be for the Phins to sign Rolle to a one year contract and draft a safety late in the draft as an insurance policy.
