Xavien Howard is set for a knee scope to fix minor damage.
Xavien Howard was placed on the PUP list and could miss the start of the 2016 Miami Dolphins training camp due to minor damage to his knee.
First, it’s not the end of the world, but it does complicate matters to this crucial training camp.
Yes, it doesn’t take a great sportsbook to bet that it never a good thing to have a player suffer any damage to their knee, but this is the smallest procedure when it comes to knee surgery, so that’s sort of encouraging…sort of.
This does amplify the Dolphins thoughts on bringing in Leon Hall, the likelihood that Tony Lippett will end up the starter, and limits the impact on the contribution of Hoawrd for this season.
Now, new head coach Adam Gase thinks he could have Howard back by Week One of the regular season – at the latest. So, it’s not a season ending injury, but with Miami starting off with such a tough schedule, they may look to veteran Hall to help with the tough start.
On the negative side, this will impact the career of a young prospect who might have made it, but will likely end up cut due to a veteran being hired.
Xavien Howard was expected to start or back-up the corner spot.
There are a few issues that arise though beyond the career’s of a young gun.
First, while Miami has the cap room – plenty of it – to go get Hal, Hall fits better in the nickel role rather than as a starter outside.
Second, it almost forces Lippett into role of starter with the current personnel, rather than Miami’s staff making the decision based on him winning it.
At the very least, there are a few days for the front office and staff to figure it out and make plans. The only real problem I have is since he was injured last day of camp…why did they wait? It’s always interesting – isn’t it! Go Fins!!!
