How Good Is Phins Zach Seiler Playing?

Zach Seiler has improved the Phins toughness on the D-line

Last season that I was very intrigued by the addition of Zach Seiler after watching the limited tape available with the Raven. When Brian Flores was so excited to acquire him, and I realized the odd set of circumstances that forced the Raven to put their 2018 7th Round pick on the waiver wire, my interest was raised even higher. So far, Seiler has outperformed my expectations. Phins fans should be excited because he looks to be a legit diamond in the rough.

Passion, effort, size, and intelligence are hallmarks of Seiler’s game. The pay per head sites bet this is just what the doctor ordered for this Phins defensive front… and exactly the type of player Brian Flores covets.

Seiler has turned heads with his play

It’s easy to overlook Seiler by his stat sheet. Posting 8 tackles and 0.5 sacks isn’t earth-shattering production. But, when you see the tape and consider these stats have come from only 77 snaps, Seiler looks like a very promising find for the Phins. PFF currently has Seiler ranked as the 52nd best interior linemen in the NFL. Before we crown him though, we’ll need to see a much bigger sample size of his play. Still, not too shabby.

This was from a Phinsnews article two weeks ago:

“At least for one game, Zach Seiler proved to be a valuable upgrade on the defensive line. Seiler showed he could be a factor in both the pass rush and run support. While I’ve been high on Seiler, the time for him to take his spot with some big games coming up. The matchup between Godchaux and Seiler will be one of my keys to watching the next game.“

So far, Seiler (#92) has made his limited snaps count up and down the line from the 0-5 technique as a D-end and D-tackle. Below is a clip of his play against the Seahawks. For a man 6’6” near 300lbs, Seiler has a pretty decent change of direction, agility, and a good ability to use his hands to swim and shed to go along with his relentless play.

Now, some are wondering what’s going on with Raekwon Davis.

After watching the above clip notice the difference in the play of Davis.

First, Davis (#98) isn’t as relentless or as agile as Seiler. He has zero pass moves or a change of direction. As I’ve said for a while, anytime he plays in 3-tech (just off the outside shoulder of the guard) he is almost always neutralized. He just so tall and doesn’t have the speed or technique to play that spot right now. But, that was a nice spin and swim move for a giant! Davis has talent, but he’s a work in progress. Also, notice as he slides head up on the guard or even farther in to head up on the center how his play improves. His power has a tremendous effect on the center and he is even a fact in pursuit when he lines up in 2-0 tech.

Finally, to add some sunshine as we enter a big game today, the clip below shows how well Seiler and Davis complement each other when Davis is at around the center and Seiler is off him around the guard. I really like the idea of Wilkens at the 3-tech, Davis at 1-0 tech, and Seiler as the other 3-tech on the other side in a run front.

Seiler is a Free Agent next year, let’s hope the Phins can keep him if he proves to be legit. Keep your eye on Seiler today because if can play like last week, Miami might just pull out the big win today! Go Phins!!!
