Assessing the 2021 Phins Final Roster

Here we go, the 2021 Phins ‘final’ roster is here

The final cuts for the 53 man roster were made, and now the Week 1 team for the 2021 Miami Dolphins is all but finalized. Well aside from any moves made leading up to the Patriots game… and thereafter. So, what were the shockers and what should we make of the roster as it stands now? The Phins more interesting moves:

Miami traded for a released LB Benardrick McKinney, who I was very excited about. But, money had to factor into it. The Dolphins were $26 million over the cap before they began cutting and were strapped with $18 million in dead cap space, and McKinney was expensive even after his pay cut. Given how the Patriots loaded up on running backs and have a strong interior O-line, you can bet with the best bookie software that this move makes me a little nervous.

The Phins also released C Matt Skura… but this wasn’t a huge loss or surprise. He isn’t a very good starter and is too expensive for a backup. The trade for Raven O-linemen, Greg Mancz with a late-round swap spelled the end for Skura. Mancz is cheaper and clearly a backup, so this was addition by subtraction at the very least.

QB/WR/RB Malcolm Perry was released and quickly claimed by the Patriots. This is likely just so they can pick his brain for their Week 1 match-up against the Phins. Could it be for more? We’ll see. Pay Per Head Casino Services.

The Dolphins also released Patrick Laird and Gerrid Doaks. These moves were made a bit of a surprise because the Phins now only have 3 running back on the roster and 7 wide receivers!

It does appear that passing and finesse football is the aim for this squad. Although, Miami might be looking to play the patience game with hopes to trade some of their receivers and feel they can pick up running backs for depth down the road.

Injury may have forced the Phins to keep 5 TEs!

The Dolphins have five TEs on the roster and it appears that the multiple injuries to Adam Shaheen and Hunter Long made them keep TE Cethan Carter. Long term, I don’t see how they can keep 7 receivers and 5 tight ends. So, I expect this to change at some point.

Other shockers in roster moves:

  1. 2020 5th RD pick DE Jason Strowbridge was released after 1 season
  2. LB Duke Riley made the squad, but his tape had ‘pop’ in preseason
  3. Texans LB Brennan Scarlett made the roster over fellow Texan McKinney. Maybe it was his play that greased the skips on McKinney. I’ve been intrigued by the player all offseason, it will be interesting to see how these two moves play out.
  4. CBs Trill Williams and Justin Coleman made the squad and claimed Jets DB Elijah Campbell off waivers.

Practice Squad as we know it now:

  • RB Gerrid Doaks
  • CB Javaris Davis
  • QB Reid Sinnett
  • WR Kirk Merritt
  • LB Calvin Munson

Well, here we go!!! It’s less than two weeks before this huge 2021 Season kicks off! There are so many storylines that are big ones that will play out this season. Overall, my only real concern is the offensive line and the run game. Maybe we’ll have such a dynamic passing game that the run game will just need to be the cherry on top! We’ll find out soon enough. These two weeks can’t fly fast enough. Go Phins!!!
