The Phins loaded up on defensive talent despite being a stout 2020 defense
The Miami Dolphins took a big step in the right direction last year with their 10-6 record. In 2021, the hopes are high that they can improve on this again. A major reason for the Phins’ quick turnaround last season was their Defense. It will be the backbone of all the success this season, but can they be even better this season?
Last year, the defense was a ‘bend but don’t break’ type of defense that gave up 367.9 yards per game, which was 20th best in the league.
This can easily be improved upon.
Impact defense more than made up for the yards allowed

Jerome Baker was resigned and expects to improve in 2021 as a blitzer. Andrew Van Ginkel only had roughly 500 snaps in 2020, so will Van Noy out the door, he should get even more opportunities. Add in DE Emmanuel Ogbahm who had 9 sacks and all the tools are there to equal or surpass the 2020 sack totals.

Flores is verging on special as a defensive coordinator
There is no mystery that Coach Flores is a defensive-minded coach. For two seasons, his schemes get the most out of his players, so the expectations should be that the defense is Top 5 in the league. Despite all the offensive firepower added, the defense will be our strength. In comparison, the offense has potential… but a lot of questions need to be answered at QB, the running game, and the offensive line. Of course, this could totally flip if Tua breaks out and Howard is unavailable. Let’s pray Tua breaks out and Howard is available!
Even with the loss of the veteran leadership of Bobby McCain, our secondary should still be elite–as long as the coaches can continue to scheme up ways to get pressure on the QB, which makes life easier on our secondary. Can Jevon Holland be as good as advertised and claim one of the starting safety roles? If he can outplay McCain, then look out!
Given how uneven the 2020 Season was for the league and the Dolphins, Brian Flores still managed quite an impressive showing. Barring anything crazy, with all the new talent, maturation of young players, and a ‘normal season’, Flores has everything he needs to outdo last season. I’m betting Flores and this Phins’ defense bring something special.

Thanks, nice article on the defense. The bend not break worked because the Phins had a lot of turnovers. If X is not there, that philosophy has less of an impact. I’m hoping they work something out with X because 10 ints are tough to replace.
Thanks, brother… this was Jimmy’s, but I totally agree on how big a hurt X puts on this def. if he isn’t there for whatever reason. The situation with him is really sticky. So many huge storylines for this season… never seen this many big storylines mashed into one Phins season, Len!
I think you hit it on the head in this article. Tua has to keep our offense on the field and score. Special Teams need to keep the opponents deep. The defense may not have Hoard’s services. The guys we let go may have been more productive than the new guys. We have a better schedule this year than last so that helps. My guess is that Howard plays and the new guys work themselves into the lineup by game 4. They should become very productive, which will help everyone else be productive. Special Teams will be about the same as last year. I don’t have a good feeling about the O-line and Tua. He may get hurt or just never grasp the playbook properly. Brissett may have to become the new Fitz-magic! The O-line must jell or we will have a limited running game and sacked QB’s. No O-line chemistry – NO 10 & 6 or 11 & 5 season.
Jimmy did a good job… and I agree with you both that Tua needs to bring a semi-potent “O” this season or it could wear out this defense… especially if Howard isn’t available. “Brissett may have to become the new Fitz-magic! ” If he does, then Miami is in trouble cause Tua will have missed the mark. Oline… yup! Jackson must get better and this Oline needs to play at least in the middle of the NFL pack. Very few excuses for anyone going into this season… other than Howard prices himself out. If that’s the case, Miami will have a hard time getting double-digit wins. Noah was terrible last season… and it was way more than just rookie blues. This puts a big bind on this team. Hopefully, he takes a big step forward.
