Dolphins Trade for Talib & Send Howard to I.R.

Howard was sent to I.R. and Dolphins traded with Rams for Talib

The crazy Miami Dolphins 2019 Season just became wilder. Xavien Howard and his huge contract are now on Injured Reserve. Also, the Phins acquired cornerback Aqib Talib from the Rams, who is on I.R. as well. Lastly, Miami claimed cornerback Xavier Crowford off waivers from Houston and released tight end Nick O’Leary.

The Dolphins now have three corners on I.R.: Talib, Cordrea Tankersly, and Howard. Although, Tankersly is on the bubble of returning… but could just as likely be shelved for the rest of the season also.

Who knows?

Talib is a Free Agent after this season and out due to a serious rib injury. He won’t likely want to play for the cellar-dwelling Phins. The Rams sent Talib and a 5th round-pick to Miami in exchange for a late-round future draft pick. So, it appears the rationale is Miami would swallow his $4.2 million dollar salary to get the pick and not with the expectation for Talib to play.

The Dolphins ripped a page out of the Browns playbook on this one.

Hey, if Ross doesn’t mind, neither do I. This trade along with the Drake trade gives Miami two more picks for the 2020 Draft.

Dolphins 2020 Draft Haul… as of now:
  • First-round-picks: (3)
  • Second-round-picks: (2)
  • Third-round-picks: (1) and possibly a compensatory pick for Ju’waun James
  • Fourth-round-picks: (1)
  • Fifth-round-picks: (2) and possibly a compensatory pick for Wake and another from the Cardinals if Drake performs and turns their sixth into a fifth
  • Sixth-round-picks: (3) minus 1 if Drake performs and the sixth turns into a fifth
  • Seventh-round-picks: (2)

That a sure total of 14 picks with a possible total of 16 total depending on the compensatory picks awarded.

Wow!!! And you can bet with the pay per head sites that Chris Grier isn’t done wheeling and dealing.

Nick O’Leary no more

Nick O’Leary was a bright spot last year. But, this season he has been shakey. O’Leary bouncing a pass off his chest and into the hands of Minkah Fitzpatrick was the final straw. It appears Flores trust Durham Smythe enough to fill that role. He’d better because no one else can.

Howard’s injury should bring concern

I wrote last month that I was concerned about Howard’s knee injury. His play has been off all season. His cuts haven’t been sharp since early in Training Camp. He did end up missing time in the preseason, so I’m wondering how long has he been battling the knee injury?

Miami will have plenty of holes to fill… and Howard yearly knee injury could mean they have one more

The same knee Howard has had two surgeries on is the one that has knocked him out of this season. Howard has missed 24 games in 4 seasons because of this reoccurring knee issue. Thankfully it’s not an ACL or MCL tear, but it’s not good however you slice it. I’m not a doctor, but I wonder how many games he has left for his career? Given how crucial the position is and how often he misses games, is cornerback now another need in the 2020 Draft?

Howard did play a full season in 2017. Maybe there’s hope that any cornerback they draft in the 2020 Draft is meant to play next to Howard… and not replace him.

Well, with Howard gone, Miami’s awful secondary will get even worse… unless Tankersly has an epiphany. First-overall-pick in 2020 here we come! All you can do is laugh, evaluate the players, pray for the Pats don’t go undefeated and win the Super Bowl in Miami… and wait for the offseason. Go Phins!!!

Howard looked injured! Of course, anyone with brains should protect their career by looking injured. As far as O’Leary, He was more of a fullback or H-back than a pure Tight End. With the below average Dolphin offensive line blocking for the two average running backs, we have on the roster – O’Leary should have been a fullback on evry running play. If the swayback Dolphins had any sense they would use an old pro-set (Far) where O’Leary could have went in motion to the slot on pass plays. He might even have been held in to block a little for Ryan Fitzpatrick. If you give Fitz-magic a little time, he might get you a win! OOPPS! I forgot, it’s a good thing they cut O’Leary we might have screwed up and won a game.

The team is so bad they don’t have sufficient bench players to rest the poor guys starting. What a mess – even for a REBUILDING team.

I’m really a believer the tank is on… through the game I was thinking about the next article and seeing how they were playing I was going to do a mei culpa on proclaiming Flores was trying to tank… then there was the time out and the zero blitz… it’s on baby! They could have won that game… felt like the D quit a bit after that call. You post had to be approved for some reason. Never had that before. Weird. I hate this system Jimmy has on this thing.
