Phins Future In Light of the New Playoff Proposal

Phins are poised to build a contender with a new age of playoffs on the horizon

The Miami Dolphins have positioned themselves with enough draft ammo over the next two years to potentially turn this frog of a franchise back into the king it once was. And if all this potential is actually realized the Phins will have to battle their way to the top in a whole new postseason bracket. Given the type of staff and Front Office we saw in 2019, this new playoff format is very good news for the Dolphins and their fans.

So why talk about a proposal before it’s decided on? Well, Dolphins’ news is a bit dry at the moment… And from everything being said, the new playoff format is guaranteed. Of course, this is the propaganda from the owner’s side. The players will have an equal say in whether this actually happens. At the moment, they aren’t happy about the new CBA. But, when it’s all said and done, I highly doubt the new playoff format is part of their dislike of the CBA proposal.

Who wants more than 16 Regular Season games?

Now the owner’s wanting to expand the Regular Season schedule to 17 or 18 games is a whole nutha’ story. You can bet with the pay per head sportsbook sites that this will end up being a real point of contention unless the owners fork over a bigger percentage of the pie. And honestly, I side with the players on this one. The season is already a meat grinder on their bodies and I really don’t need to see any more games. Add to this, I don’t want to see long-standing records diminished with padded stats.

But, the cheap owners will eventually up the anty and the players will agree to a 17 game schedule. So, I guess I’ll have to accept this part of the new NFL, too.

So, what are these new postseason rules you say?

New Playoff Rules that will likely be installed
  • 7 teams instead of six teams per conference will make the playoffs.
  • Only one team with get a Bye Week.
  • These playoff implications will likely be compounded by a 17-week Regular Season schedule.

It’s been two decades since the postseason formula has changed, so my first response to these new playoff rules was ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’. But, after reading some articles, the new playoff structure quickly grew on me. This will certainly create quality games and competition at the end of the Regular Season. Also, the extra postseason spot and subtraction of a Bye Week will really test of franchises build their teams. This stress will be even more increased if extra games are added to the Regular Season.

Though I’m not sold on the extra games, this new postseason format sounds great.

Phins team-building style in this new format

All of these moves will reward the younger and deeper teams. Highly talented but thin teams are at a disadvantage playing these extra games. It will all but demand that this type of team design gets the top seed in their conference. This doesn’t offer teams with studs surrounded by duds good odds to win it all. Building a team based on youth and depth will offer a better route. This will further increase the already immense value of draft picks.

Given how we saw the Dolphins put their 2019 team together and the amount of draft picks they have over the next two years, Miami is in the perfect position to take advantage of this new format. Also, Brian Flore’s ability to pull guys off the streets and get them ready and playing well in a hurry is the cherry on top!

I guess until the CBA is signed and we get a second offseason of evaluation for Grier I shouldn’t get too excited. But it is the offseason after all and high-grade hopium is what this time of year is all about! No? Go Phins!!!

For instant the offensive linemen below are on the top teams in the nation and many of them will get drafted to high and many of them rightly have moved to higher rounds based on the last few games and the last half of the season? This is very nice selection of offensive linemen to select from in the correct rounds

Turning the frog back into a Franchise means all of the above. I believed the best module is to follow these players threw out their college careers to really understand that players true draft value? Many of these players based on performances will moved up and down the draft board and many of them maybe should not be in the round selected for them? For instance if a player has earned the best at position in the nation then that warrants a 1st round selection but not the case many times?

They definitely, need to find at least 1 elite player with all these picks. They haven’t found one in years. Howard is close, but health and now character take him out of that group. Jones had some elite years, but beyond that Wake is the last.

Now that I think about it, Ritchie might have been another but they let him go before he really hit the highest level

Narrowing selection down to 14 picks or more for the dolphins!
Every spring, NFL teams meet with prospects for the upcoming draft in the months leading up to the draft itself.

There are many opportunities for players and teams to meet with one another:
    Including all-star games
    Pro days,
    The NFL Scouting Combine,
    Workouts, and private visits.
    All-star game
    The NFLPA Bowl,
    East-West Shrine Game
    Senior Bowl

All tend to be informal conversations between players and NFL evaluators, coaches, and decision makers. On the other hand, meetings at the Combine are strictly limited to 60 meetings per team at 15 minutes per meeting. The meetings here can cover anything the team wishes, including medical questions, reviewing film, going over a playbook, or simply an interview-like series of questions.

My questioned about the positioning in the draft is out of the 30 pre draft visits how many of those players will the Dolphins draft?
Based on NFL data the Steeler have drafted in each round those who have pre visited them. http://insidethepylon.com/nfl/front-office/2017/06/30/effect-pre-draft-visit/

    Hello Admin

    Nice Article!

As you stated Miami is in the perfect position to take advantage of this new format. One segment Perfecting the draft is key, maybe not as expensive as paying free agency signing etc. The Fins cannot overdraft nor under-draft these players currently we have 14 draft picks and maybe more picks to come?

    • admin

They need every pick and more. If they do really well, they’ll hit on what? maybe 50% of those picks? This is why I don’t like trading up… we need all these picks and more if we draft very well…
