Phins Out of ‘Worst Team Ever’ Talk… Now What?

Some feared a ‘Perfect Season’ for Pats and an ‘Anti Perfect Season’ for Phins

Despite what appeared a ‘tank job’, the Phins notched their first win of the season against the New York Jest. Miami was the laughing stock of the league, but now the Jets, Browns, Redskins, and Bengals are now taking most of the heat from the media.

After two horrific blowouts, the Phins have slowly improved and their last few games have been closely contested losses. While many teams are trending down, the Phins are trending up. Even if that arc up is slight, it’s a testament to the coaching of Brian Flores.

Miami might be bad in 2019, but thankfully they aren’t among the worst ever

This win against the Jets has removed the Dolphins from being in the conversation of worst team in NFL history. Prior to the season, the best pay per head sportsbook (www.AcePerHead.com)projected the Dolphins to be the worst team in the league. The money guys had Miami with the lowest Regular Season win total of any team in the league at 4.5 games under -125. For those not wagering savvy, this just means that someone would have to wager $125 to win $100 if the Dolphins won less than 4.5 games this season. Although Vegas may have nailed the win total, several other teams are far worse than anticipated.

With only five teams winless since 1944 (the 2008 Lions and 2017 Browns the most recent), the 2019 Dolphins will end up bad this season, but at least not all-time terrible. That appears reserved for the Bengals. This lone win removes them from the conversation of ‘worst eva’ and should force the media to change their narrative. Although, some talking heads have stuck to their guns and even doubled down.

Though the Dolphins are out of that conversation, it is far less likely they secure that coveted first pick in the upcoming draft. I desperately want us to get the #1 overall pick, but those hopes are in serious jeopardy

The ‘downside’ to the victory is a lower draft pick

Sure even if we end up getting the top pick, we still need to make it count. Also, there’s no guarantee that whoever is available at #1 will be the ‘savior of this franchise’. However, having the first choice in the entire draft puts full control of getting the one player this organization wants the most. With this power card, there’s no missing out on any player because a team will pick ahead of us.

This likely won’t be the position Miami has in the 2020 Draft.

With all the terrible teams this year, Miami looks like they’ll end up somewhere around the 3rd- 6th pick. This year the Phins and their fans can’t have their cake and eat it too like in 2007.

Chances are Miami won’t be able to trade up to the top spot either

In addition, while having three 1st Round picks and plenty of ammunition to trade up or down, the talents of Tua, Burrow, and Young will likely make the trade up to get them cost-prohibitive or not possible. The Bengals will be looking for QB, and if they get that spot they won’t trade out. And if Miami falls behind the half a dozen teams with only 1 or 2 wins, they will need to fork over at least two, and likely more, blue-chip picks to move up to get one of these three players.

While it sounds good to go get ‘your quarterback’, a miss that big would kill this regime and franchise for a long time. BUT like every fan, I want the Phins to become champions again. Being this close and missing out on a franchise quarterback will be a major letdown to our fan base if one of these rookies wins a Super Bowl before Miami does.

The Phins could end up in a very sticky situation come the draft… unless they have a successful plan for the quarterback position that doesn’t include Tua or Burrow.

Like I said before, I’m all in on this reset and makeover of the team, but a little success could have us missing out on the most important part of the rebuild. Of course, Chris Grier could have an ace up his sleeve.
