Rosen needs to show starter material in 2019
Most fans and sports commentators are applauding the Dolphins for the value they received on their draft day trade for QB Josh Rosen…
… although there are some detractors.
Phinsnews is among those clapping hard and loudly.
We all know the backstory on Rosen being the 10th overall pick last year for the Cardinals and then becoming expendable because of Coach Kingsbury’s longtime infatuation with Kyler Murray. As a result, the Dolphins got a bargain on a young starting QB.
And even though the Dolphins organization stated that Rosen won’t get handed the starting job…
… all Phin fans should hope Rosen earns the starting job.
Now, I was far less thrilled about our signing of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. He isn’t the long-term answer in Miami. It also worried me that Fitzmagic would manage to win us a couple more games… Not enough to make us relevant, but enough to put us in no man’s land of the draft. Same old draft position in the 1st Round—just outside of the top 10.
With Rosen on board, the situation has changed for Miami.
Rosen is young and going into just his second NFL season. Even though he didn’t have a great first season in the NFL, he has valuable starting experience. With his rookie jitters are gone, what we see from Rosen will be what he is.
The beauty of this trade is, not only did we get Rosen cheap, but because of the current situation of a young regime without a franchise QB, Miami can give Rosen a trial run to see if he’s the long-term answer. And if not, Miami can draft one of the elite QB’s in 2020 draft… and this regime won’t suffer a serious setback.
Has Miami’s luck finally changed?
Did we finally land our much-coveted franchise QB?
The only way to know these answers is to get him on the field as soon as possible. Rosen must have a sizable body of work as the starter next season… but he must earn it over lame duck Fitzpatrick. Despite the jokes of Fitzmagic, this won’t be easy for Rosen. The more likely scenario is that ‘Fitz’ will play himself out of the spot.
The only downside to this trade is if we don’t know what Rosen is by the end of the 2019 Season. Good or bad, this regime must determine Rosen’s value heading into next year’s draft.
Fitzpatrick winning the job and coming out the gate hot could pose problems for Miami long-term
As odd as it sounds, Fitzpatrick starting the season and winning could be the worst-case scenario. If we win enough games this year and fall out of a top 5 pick, then it must be because Rosen was the starting QB.
It doesn’t take sports betting software to know winning with Rosen is a much different storyline than winning with Fitzpatrick.
I’ll admit, I expected this upcoming season to be a complete disaster with little to look forward to besides putting ourselves in a position to draft in the Top 5 Pick to get a Tua, Herbert, or Fromm. However, the anticipation of seeing Rosen in action has my eyes glued to see if our beloved Phins have finally found their franchise QB.
If not, it isn’t the end of the world. Miami can still take a shot on a QB in the 1st Round next draft. Either way, I am pleased that Miami has a new young QB on the roster… even though I am not ‘through the roof’ about Rosen. This move finally shows me that this organization is serious about finding our next franchise QB.
What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about Rosen being the day 1 starter for us this season?
