The Phins Have Many Roads to QB Success

The careers of Fitzpatrick, Tua, and Rosen could have any number of positive outcomes for the Phins

The future of the Phins quarterback situation has already been written in stone by most: Fitzpatrick the stopgap, Rosen the bust, and Tua the eventual starter and star.

Done, done, and done. Book it!

While this is the more likely outcome, prognostications on NFL careers rarely turn out that up nice and neat.

The Phins have multiple opportunities to get the quarterback right

Chris Grier has created plenty of avenues for success at quarterback and any number could succeed or fail. The numbers game favors Miami getting at least one win out of them. It would be a real long shot with the best pay per head software like www.AcePerHead.com to see the Dolphins roll snake eyes at quarterback.

This is why fans shouldn’t hang their hearts on any particular outcome other than Miami finds a quality quarterback somehow, some way in the next two seasons.

Now, every Phin fan would love Tua to be an absolute stud who leads the Dolphins to success with his arm for the next decade-plus. Unfortunately, this hope is a real longshot. This isn’t a knock on Tua. Phins fans shouldn’t put the expectation on Tua to be the ‘next Dan Marino’. Very, very few quarterbacks in NFL history have ever been or will be that good.

The more realistic road for Tua and to a championship is to build a deep team based around good defense and run game with some game-breaking receivers and a good quarterback. Tua and his skillset fit this role like a glove.

Remember that Miami winning a Super Bowl isn’t all about finding an uber elite quarterback… if they have a well-built team. Look how far the Dolphins went with a broken down Chad Pennington.

Now, if Tua is elite with a good team around him…

… Oh, baby!…

… Be still my beating heart, I’m nearing 50.

The many roads for Fitzpatrick
  • If Fitzpatrick plays like last season, his production will blossom with a better cast. High production at QB alongside a quality team could turn the 2020 Dolphins into a Cinderella team.
  • What if Miami Fitzpatrick makes a real push this season? Do the Phins sign Fitzpatrick for a final run in 2021? How would the team take it if they don’t resign the best QB in the division and Tua struggles?
  • If Fitzpatrick struggles, the Phins could end up with a top pick in next year’s draft and in range for one of the elite QB prospects. This could at least give them a 4th option at QB.
  • Either way, if Fitzpatrick starts all season and they go with Tua, Miami will be in a position to get a solid compensatory pick.
The many roads for Tua
  • Obviously, the best-case scenario is Tua is a transcendent player and never gets bit by the injury bug again.
  • The more likely scenario is Tua takes a couple of years to figure it out and provides quality, but not elite, play. This is still a big win if he remains relatively healthy and is in the top 3rd tier of QBs.
  • If Tua always struggles to stay healthy but is productive, Miami could live with that as well. They’d need a pretty good backup to make this work.
  • The worst-case scenario is if it takes more than two seasons to determine if he’s ‘the one’ and he isn’t.
The many roads for Rosen
  • How many quarterbacks played at a very high level in their 1st or 2nd season? Not many at all. While Rosen is billed as a bust, and I admit elite play appears off the table, pretty good is still in the mix. Remember, Rosen is only a year older than Tua.
  • Rosen has the next 2-3 season to find some sort of legs as the opportunities present themselves. Rosen could be a late bloomer. And if he shows something he could generate a pick for Miami in a trade or a longer contract. In this scenario, if Tua continues to be a nicked up player, Rosen could someday play an Earl Morrall 2.0.
  • The obvious worst-case scenario is Rosen is a complete bust and Miami wasted a 2nd Round pick.

Given all the potential, Miami stands a pretty darn good chance to have quality quarterback play. Considering that over the last two decades the Dolphins either had no options or pinned everything on only one option, this is a much better game plan.

Now, we just have to wait and see how it all plays out. Hopefully, the waiting period isn’t too long. Go Phins!!!
