Does Tua Surgery Tank the ‘Tank for Tua’ Talk?

Tua is getting another surgery on an injured ankle

With this season being ‘what it is’, there’s far more hope looking towards next year’s draft than this season’s gameday. But there’s been a big update to one of the Phins prime options at QB… and it complicates the ‘Tank for Tua’ talk.

All of the best bookmaker software programs like Ace Pay Per Head, have been projecting the Dolphins to get the top pick in 2020 and use that pick on Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa.

However, Phinsnews has already said that Tua isn’t a 100% sure thing. Tua is blessed with one of the best teams in the country and has the luxury to throw to 3 stud wide receivers that will all be starters in the NFL. This superior talent around him certainly pads his stats. Add in his ‘short’ stature, injury history, and an average arm and there are plenty of asterisks on whether he will be an elite NFL QB.

Does a second ankle surgery move Tua down the list

The latest negative spin on Tua is that he just had ankle surgery.  The more concerning thing is that Tua has suffered his second ankle injury in as many years and each year it has been a different ankle. Both of Tua’s ankles are now being supported by titanium.

Can Tua stay healthy at the next level? In the NFL he’ll have to face better competition with a less talented roster backing him. Add to that he’ll play behind a Miami Offensive line that is a weakness on a bad team.

This isn’t to say he can’t be a good quarterback for Miami, rather it’s by no means a certainty that he will.

None of this may matter anyway… if the Bengals get the top pick next year. They are just as bad (if not worse) than the Dolphins. Cincinnati could very well be the deciding factor in who gets the 1st overall pick in the draft. If the Bengals get the #1 pick in 2020, they will use that pick on Tua… or whoever the top-rated quarterback is.

Tua V.S. Burrows November 9th will be a big game for Phins fans

Phins fans should keep an eye on other potential QB’s. Even though Owner Steven Ross might prefer Tua, the Dolphins brain trust of Grier and Flores might have a different QB in mind.

One such player is LSU QB Joe Burrows, who is shooting up the ranks.

Burrow has LSU ranked at number 2 on the AP top 25 with a 7-0 record. He has already set most of the LSU passing records for a season… with 5 games to play. So far he has passed for 2,484 yards with a 79.4% completion percentage 29 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and 94 yards on the ground and rushing 2 touchdowns. Whereas Tua has passed for 2,166 yards with a 74.7% completion percentage, 27 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and 30 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. Also, Burrow stands at 6’4” and 216 pounds compared to Tua who is 5’11” and 208 pounds.

Of course, Burrows and Tua are just two of the possible QB choices in this upcoming draft for Miami. If the Dolphins want to turn this franchise around, they must nail this pick!

The real question now is how will this second ankle surgery affect his status in the Dolphins eyes? If the Dolphins really are eyeing him as their QB, does this change everything?

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fan’s thoughts on the latest injury news of Tua and what this means for us in the upcoming draft?

Burrow has been responsible for 31 TDs this season (29 passing, two rushing). That broke the single-season total of 29, also jointly held by Russell (2006) and Mauck (2003).

Playing in just his 20th game for LSU, the Ohio State transfer tied Rohan Davey (1998-2001) for career 300-yard games at seventh in going for 327 against State.

Burrow set the single-season record for passing yards per game (minimum seven games). With 354.9 yards so far, he smashed Davey’s old mark of 278.9 yards per game (2001).

Also, needing a minimum of 20 games to qualify for the career record for passing yards per game, Burrow has averaged 268.9 yards — shattering the old record of 207.2 yards by Tommy Hodson (1986-89).

NOW ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BALL.

Ohio State defensive end Chase Young now tied for 2nd most sacks in program history

The four sacks of Badger quarterback Jack Coan, Young now has 13.5 sacks this year, and 27.5 sacks for his career at Ohio State. And that — if you didn’t know — is tied for 2nd place with Jason Simmons all-time in program history. The only guy he’s now behind is the beloved great Mike Vrabel.

Most Quarterbacks in college look good until they play in the NFL. I agree Fritz Chase Young presents on the Dolphins defensive line would enhanced their performance greatly.

We can draft a quarterback preferably in the second round. I would bet on Quarterback Anthony Gordon.

This was really a good game, you be the judge who was the better QB in this game. Remember we are talking about a projected number picked vs a QB who is ranked for 2020 NFL draft un drafted to 7th or 6th rounder.

    Hello Dol-Fans

We have been introduced to LSU’s Joe Burrow’s.

Now Meet Anthony Gordon: This is want I know about him, Anthony is the WSU QB from Garner Menshew. We know Luke Fulk was drafted by the Titan in the 6 round the next year traded to the Dolphins. Menshew was a 6th rounder drafted by the Jags. Anthony Gordon has already beaten Menshew passing records and is said to be better than both Falk and Menshew.

Gordon started the season not being ranked, If he comes out now he would be rated a 6th rounder by December he may earned a 5th 4th rounder: What’s unique about him is below.

Senior quarterback Anthony Gordon leads the nation in passes 2981 yards 29 TD 7 Intersection 7 sacks this season 2019. Joe Burrow’s 2484 yards 29 TD 3 intersection.Prior to this season Joe Burrow’s was ranked 2nd rounder or third rounder.

Here is where he ranks among Cougar quarterbacks of lore:

    1.Anthony Gordon 11.7

    2.Ryan Leaf 10.1

    3.Timm Rosenbach 9.1

    4.Jason Gesser 8.4

    5.Gardner Minshew 7.8

Number 11 Oregon Duck Quarterback Justin Herbert and Washington State Cougar Anthony Gordon Quarterback Saturday. 10/26/2019

He is one the Dolphins may steal in the draft as a second QB.

Need to watch Gordon… I think they should draft early and draft one late on a flyer unless Fitz is brought back.

    Hello Dol-Fans

YETUR GROSS MATOS EDGE PEN STATE (Yetur is closed to a late 1st to high second rounder) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsuBv04NY6g

    Johathan Taylor R/B Wisconsin
Yetur Gross Matos Edge Pen State

Right now, my gut is saying Chase or Burrow… but my gut isn’t too informed. Lookign forward to the LSU/ Bama game… been sick again and didn’t pay attention to the LSU game this week… How did Burrow do?

      • Steve

        Yeah!

I thought that you were under the weather! Hope you get better?

Burrow Overcomes Slow Start to Carry LSU

Facing its most difficult test of the season, the Tigers offense looked mortal for the first time. Burrow’s overall stat line was strong, and he made some terrific plays to keep the team going.

Joe Burrow, QB (LSU): 32-of-42, 321 yards, one touchdown, one interception; 13 carries, 31 yards, one touchdown

    Hello Dol-Fans

Miami is Tanking and has traded away many players and still trading away players. The Jet’s,Bengals and Washington have not stripped their team and they are awful.

      Steve,
Miami may not finish the season with the number onw pick in the 2020 draft. And I think they should target Chase Young not Tua. I believe Tua is a good prospect but not any better than Joe Burrow.
As you mentioned in your post, the Jets drafted all those good prospects and look how awful they are playing. I am so glad we did not get Darnold nor Mayfield for that matter.

  • Steve

Tua’s injury will most likely give Alabama a lost against LSU.
Tua has to be healthy to get a win against LSU. This injury will also effect Tua’s draft stock, how much will it effect his stock I don’t know. It want knocked him out of the top 7 picks.

Example situation with Tua: The questioned to the Dol-Fans knowing what you know about Patrick Mahomes injury, would you still draft him number one?

    • admin

Will he play in the game? I not really concerned with the win or loss as much as how each Qb responds. Tua may drop because of this and the Dolphins might be able to draft him if they win a few games. Or it could be the other way around if Burrow stalls. Tua, Young, and Burrow are three picks I have my eyes on…

      • Steve

        Tua

Base on what I’ve reading he’s not playing tomorrow game against Arkansas. Saban says he’s scheduled to play against LSU November 9th at 17:30.

      • Steve

        Admin and Fritz

Miami currently will determined there destiny in this 2020 draft.
The Dolphins will have to decide is it drafting Joe Burrow’s the number one QB?
        or
Chase Young the best player in the draft who we can have maybe 10 years sacking QB’s?

  • Steve

    Joe Burrow’s

LSU will face a Top 10 opponent for the third time this year as the second-ranked Tigers host Auburn (No. 9 AP/No. 10 Coaches) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in Tiger Stadium. CBS will televise the LSU game for the second straight week.

LSU enters the game riding an 8-game winning streak and the Tigers are 7-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. LSU remained No. 2 in the AP poll this week and No. 3 in the USA Today Coaches’ poll following the 36-13 win over Mississippi State last week.

Auburn is coming off a 51-10 win over Arkansas and brings a 6-1 overall mark and a 3-1 league record into the game. As of mid season 10/24/2019 Joe Burrow’ has earned the 1st place recognition.

  • Fritz

The “Tua to the Dolphins” thing is mostly media driven. I would like Miami to pick Chase Young with their first pick in the 1st Round then go after the QB they like with their next first round in the 1st Round. Whereas Tua is a good prospect, I’m not convinced he is the best QB prospect.

BTW, the ankle is a very resilient joint so I would imagine he should do fine. I played soccer on my surgically repaired ankle for fifteen years after suffering a Tri-Malleolar Fracture.

Go Dolphins! Get the first win soon.

    • admin

Burrows (ATM) or Young are my dream picks, Fritz. I hope Rosen can show something this season so they are flexible enough to draft Young. Burrow is very intriguing, though. Managed to get Jimmy of Tua a little and onto Burrow. Of course the second ankle injury did most of the work.

“BTW, the ankle is a very resilient joint so I would imagine he should do fine. I played soccer on my surgically repaired ankle for fifteen years after suffering a Tri-Malleolar Fracture.”
Good info… football is a bit more impactful, but soccer player do bang their legs pretty fierce.

  • Van E Hamlin

This is pathetic! The QBs we have can’t play with the horrible offensive line we have now. Only drafting Superman would make this team better. He could pass to himself and run coast to coast without any holes being made for him.

Grier has a five year plan that will lead us to our next 5 year plan.

    • admin

I’m no college QB evaluator… but I have liked Burrow better… Jimmy had me looking at Tua… and I like him, but don’t love. I think the O-line can be much better with a good Center and LT. We could get that next year… but a quick read, smart QB would serve us better. Tua is a smart QB too… but his arm and read look slower. Maybe Burrow goes first and Tua drops to us? Frustrating for sure… I was hot on this whole thing, but so far, while I’m seeing a few nice pieces, mostly all the hope is in the accumulation of picks. I don’t know what to say, Van. I’m not sold on Tua and I like Burrow and Young more… But, I don’t like the bad winds of karma this feels like…
