Phins Training Camp is still young, but two veterans have quickly exited stage left on the 2020 Season. Allen Hurns decided to opt out because of Covid-19 concerns and Cordrea Tankersly, who just came off Covid-19 protocol, was waived soon after he came off the list. In truth, this isn’t terrible news, but it does put a small dent in the roster.
Hurns was a vet in a crowded position group
I was a fan of the initial 1-year contract of Allen Hurns… but I wasn’t dancing through the tulips on his extension. His opting out will push the somewhat bulky second year of his contract into 2021, committing Miami for an extra season. He’ll be 30 in 2021 with a $2 mill cap hit if he is cut. Not terrible but not optimal either. Now, I can’t blame Hurns in the least for opting out of the season because he has a baby boy. Family first–ALWAYS. And really the more I think about it the happier I get. Beyond the extended financial commitment, I think Hurns opting out is a positive for the Phins’ future. Hurns sitting might save Ford’s career as a Phin
I like what Isaiah Ford has brought to the table over the years. With Parker, Williams, Albert, Grant, Gesicki, and Hurns, Ford would have been dangerously close to expendable. Ford now has enough good tape that he won’t clear waivers, should Miami try to stash him on the Practice Squad like last season. Also, I don’t see Miami keeping six receivers, so with Hurns off the roster, Ford will get more reps and has a little extra cushion in Training Camp.
Hurns opting out could very well be addition by subtraction. This isn’t a knock on Hurns. That hit he took last year in Dallas was vicious. It took a tough, tough man to come back and be fearless, so I tip my hat to that kinda’ guts. But, there’s a good chance that Albert and maybe Grant too will be gone in 2021. Hurns will bring more value in 2021 when the Phins are in a position to make real noisewith a thinner receiving group.
So if Ford can make the most of this season and earn an extension, then the Phins will be better off in the long run for Hurns sitting this year, despite the extended commitment.
The 2017 Draft was a cluster of blue-chip flops
We all knew Tankersley getting cut was a great bet with the pay per head sportsbook online sites. This release though was surprisingly early, though. I had a sliver of hope that maybe there was a long-shot chance to stick because he was such a highly talented player physically with the size, length, and speed to be elite. Unfortunately, his technique and football IQ was wanting… and then came the injuries.
Miami wasted a 1st and 3rd Round pick in the 2017 Draft now that Charles Harris and Tankersley are gone. With Raekwon McMillan, Isaiah Ford, and Davon Godchaux in the final year of their contracts, 2021 Season could have zero players on the roster from that draft.
Ugly!

I don’t think 2017 turned out to be particularly strong draft. We took Charles Harris #1 but I wanted T.J. Watt. We took McMillan #2 I liked Dion Dawkins and looked at Dalvin Tomlinson. They were need picks but caught my eye. Tankersley was #3. Frankly, there was no one who caught my eye in the remainder of the draft. We had no 4th round (I had to look it up). We only got Godchaux because he came up lame in the draft. Both Davon and Vincent Taylor #6 pick didn’t look like bad picks ever. Ford #7 was a disappointment to me. He had the physical tools.
In summary, #1 was a bust, #2 should have been taken n a lower round, #3 – injury prone, #7 Bust! Remember, the Dolphins have been such a bad football team it is hard for developmental players to become better. In the past, I have wanted us to draft people who were picked after our pick and were much better but then again I have picked some lemons too.
I agree with everything but Ford. Last season he posted a 68.8 PFF grade and Williams a 67.7. Obviously, the production was better for Williams with nearly double that in yards and 3 more TDs. Also, Williams was in his 1st season and Ford in his 3rd. But, the chances of a 7th RD pick coming out and producing ever, much less year 1, is extremely low. Ford’s contract runs out this year. If he doesn’t do anything then I’d call him a bust. If he even produces pretty well this season, then he is an outlier. Successful WRs are mostly are found in the higher rounds. Ford performs this year and it was an excellent job in drafting and development by the Phins. We’ll see, Van. I thought he should have come on earlier myself because he did have the tools. But, his lack of speed and some early injuries slowed him. No excuse this season.
